| BIRMINGHAM CITIZENS
is a growing alliance of active citizens and leaders from local
institutions committed to working together for the common good.
BIRMINGHAM CITIZENS is based
upon the shared humanitarian values of justice, dignity and
self-respect. It offers local organisations across Birmingham
a way of acting on their shared values and ideas, whilst simultaneously
developing their people as citizens and communities of action.
By joining together, we are building a strong and influential
broad based organisation, winning respect in the corridors
of power and effecting positive change in local communities.
BIRMINGHAM CITIZENS is funded
through local fundraising and supported by grants from the
Barrow Cadbury and Carnegie UK trusts.
How We Do It
BIRMINGHAM CITIZENS provides
training in the theory and practice of effective organising
to local people in their organisations so that communities
can bring about positive change in their own neighbourhoods.
Learning takes place ‘in action’
and through residential workshops both locally and nationally.
YOUNG CITIZENS, the youth wing
of BIRMINGHAM CITIZENS has a
three year track record of organising young people around
quality of life issues and has developed an ‘active
citizenship’ teaching programme for schools,
to be taught as part of the ‘citizenship’
curriculum.
We are guided by research such as listening campaigns and
aim to address, through action, issues that threaten individuals,
families and neighbourhoods. Research, analysis and evaluation
are thorough. Action is firm, direct and persistent.
